That was the thought that came to my mind when we had just heard the news of my father’s death.  When the news struck my mother’s ears, she let go of the knife she was slicing okra with. THE POPULARITY OF KWANKWASO AND KWANKWASYYA SLOGAN

THE KWANKWASO AND THE POPULARITY OF -SIYYA SLOGAN THE –IYYA SLOGAN THOUGH THE SUFFIX –IYYA IS NOT NELOGISED BY KWANKWASO’S SUPPORTERS (KWANKWASIYYA) THE SUFFIX HAS BEEN POLEOLOGISED QUIET A LONG TIME IN THE HAUSA VOCABULARY. THE SUFFIX ACTUALLY MEANS A SYSTEM AS –ISM IS. SOCIALISM, CAPITALISM ETC. DIMOKRADIYYA. IT CAN ALSO MEAN NOUN FORM OF SOME VERBS IN HAUSA KNOW, SANI STRESSING THE FIRST SYLLABLE (E.G YA SANI [HE KNOWS). NOT THE NOUN SANI STRESSING THE SECOND SYLLABLE (SANI –KNOW [VERB] ). SANAYYA. SINCE SANI ENDS IN ‘I’, THE LAST ‘I’ IS NORMALLY CHANGED TO ‘A’. AS IN SANI-SANAYYA, CINIKI-CINIKAYYA, KI-KIYAYYA. HOWEVER, IF THE BASE WORD DOES NOT END IN ‘I’, THEN THE LAST WORD IS CHANGED TO ‘I’ OR ‘Y’. AS IN KI- KIYAYYA, BI-BIYAYYA, CI-CIYAYYA. SO WHAT DOES KWANKWASO MEAN WHEN HE (OR HIS SUPPORTERS) COINED THE WORD KWANKWASIYYA. KWANKWASIYYA, I THINK, WAS COINED TO MEAN A SYSTEM. KWANKWASO REFERRED HIS ADMINISTRATION AS KWANKWASIYYA. THAT IS KWANKWASO SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT. I HAVE NEVER KNOWN ANY ONE WHOM THE -IYYA HAD EVER BEEN USED WITH HIS NAME BEFORE HIM. TODAY THERE ARE MULTIPLE –YYA IN THE NORTHERN POLITICAL PLATFORM. THIS ALSO INCLUDES HIS SUCCESSOR, GANDUJE AKA GANDUJIYYA.
